THE CONE OF UNCERTAINITY – Waiting for Dorian

by Peter D. Smith

This dreaded phrase kept me awake for at least two weeks and likely more. Twenty times a day I’d be looking at the Weather Channel and seeing that damn baseball bat with the squiggles in it coming directly to our “front door”. In my mind I’m seeing five years of work being devilled by 150 mile an hour winds blasting our Tiki Hut and buildings along with a seven to ten foot storm surge rolling over our beautiful pools, and tearing up our gorgeous landscaping and crashing against our windows and doors, sand blasting everything. Each time I looked at the Weather Channel, some cute, bright, happy young lady would blabber on about the European squiggle that continued to point right at us, then cheerily talk about where the storm might or might not be heading (with steady 150 mph winds with gusts to 200 mph).

Now why was I so upset: in the first place I have been through four devastating hurricanes at our house on the water on Cape Cod, and another four or five in Florida when we lived in Tampa and Clearwater. I have to be honest, although none of them caused us any real damage, except for one time in Tampa when we had to evacuate to my mother-in-law’s condo (I would have rather waited out the storm), they did scare the dickens out of me.

Now it’s also true that I called Judy almost every day and she assured me not to worry, everything will be taken care of. Still my mind is churning so I call Brad, same answer, we’ve got it all under control. On my last call, before the storm made the turn to the northeast, Judy told me what had been done - remember we have hurricane glass in our sliders that will supposedly withstand wind to 140 mph, and we have Judy and Brad. They had done everything possible that could be done. from shutting down the pool pumps to prevent any sand damage, to lowering the pool levels to compensate for the expected 8 to 10 inches of rainfall. All the outside furniture was inside. Ashley called any incoming guests to warn them of the danger and alerted folks staying with us of what could very well occur.

My fellow owners and our terrific Board of Directors, we are blessed to have Judy and Brad and our amazing staff.
